Mystery Flower is Clue #15!

Check out this Mystery Flower Block for Clue #15!  I really love this block.  When I designed it, I was looking for two things; (1) A Block that would balance on another block in the quilt, (2) A Block that would showcase several of the larger scale beautiful fabrics, in both of the line, I'm working with, and I think this it the perfect block to achieve both of those things!

Mystery Flower - Paisley Rose and Bermuda Batik

Mystery Flower will introduce two new techniques to the series, the Sliver and the Shaded-Nine Patch.    Both of these are available as technique sheets, I have a limited number available in my Shop.

For fabric selection, you need 6 fabrics, but they can focus on 3-4 colors.  Pay attention to value, and really look to feature some of your beautiful fabrics.  In the Shaded-Nine patch, I would consider using more of a tone-on-tone in the patches.
We will be making the Corner Beam for Unit A, which you have mastered at this point, so easy peasey.

Next, we take on the Sliver, and we are going to make Left and Right Slanted pairs.  It all starts with a Half Square Triangle.

Next, you will divide your pairs into two groups.  Keep half right side up, these are your Left Slants.  Keep half right side down, these are your Right Slants.

For the Left Slant Sliver, you will use your Corner Beam to cut the Left side off.

Next, you will replace with the Left Side Triangle.
Always sew with the unit on top, the Side Triangle on the bottom.
Press carefully.
Next it is trim down.  Be careful to line up the Side Triangle and the Half Square Triangle properly before trimming down.

Rotate the unit and trim the last two sides, again be careful with lining up.

Next, perform the same tasks on the B Units, but with the right sides down.   Line up and trim.

Next, we will take on the Shaded-Nine Patch.

Make sure to keep your strip sets organized.
Lay them out.
Here is my first set.

My second set.
Stitch them together with your best 1/4".
And press.
Then you will perform the proper subcuts.

Lay them out according to the Clue's instruction.

Stitch them together and then be careful with the pressing.  You will need to "nip" the seams at a two points to get the units pressed properly.

Then, you will mark the 45 degree line, making sure to cross the key intersections.
Pair them with the rectangles, pin and stitch.
When you cut them apart, you will find that they are more than 1/2" apart, so I would recommend cutting them 1/4" from each seam line.  Leaving a little extra.
Press carefully and trim down, matching sure to line up all critical seams.

Next, it is time for Block Construction.  First put the center together.

Take your time and pin since you have some double seams.

Next, put the Slivers together.
I did precision pin my points, and was sure to have the points go through the machine last.

Layout the block, double check your orientation.  But it will come together nicely.
Sew into rows.
Then, Tada!  It is ready!

Love it!
I'm teaching at my Summer Fever Retreat in CT, so I better get back to it!

Keep Stitching,
Michelle
