Block 12! Nameless! Yes Nameless!
Woohoo! Block 12! We are a quarter of the way through Timeless with a Twist.
Block 12, Nameless, by Clara Stone, was published in Practical Needlework, in 1906. Yes, that is correct, the block is known as Nameless. There was no name associated at the time of publication and therefore Quilt Historians have taken to calling the block Nameless.
Nameless is believed to be the foundation for later blocks, most notably; Crown of Thrones, Finley 1929, Forest Trails, Laura Wheeler, 1933, and Beacon Lights, Nancy Page, 1936. Each of those blocks use the same block design, however the value placement is often changed. Additionally, the block has one more subdivision, typically splitting the unit formed between Nameless’ quarter square triangles.
We are going to take our Square-in-a-Square techniques to another level and make Square cubed, or Stacked Squares. This technique comes together easily with a newer Square2 or the Large Square Squared.
We will frame that Square cubed, with Quarter Square Triangles, made with our Tucker Trimmer to make this beautiful block.
Deb Tucker added the registration marks from the Large Square Squared onto the original Square2 about 18 months ago. So, if your Square2 is older than that, you may want to purchase a new or Larger version.
If you want to purchase the Stack Square Technique Sheet, a new Square2, or the Large Square Squared, I've included them in the 13% off Sale (use coupon code BLK13PRE good through 4/5/2018).
To select this week's color plan, I took a picture of my Blocks 1-11. I determined that I needed pink, blue and green.
With the lack of Pink, Blue and Green in mind, I pulled out my Color wheel and determined that they would look fabulous together, creating a Split Complementary color plan. Selecting Blue-Red (18) and then from across the wheel; Blue-Green (6), Turquoise (9) and Yellow-Green (3).
For my second fabric selection, I went with a Complementary color plan. Dark and Light from Spring Green (4) and 2 Mediums of Fuchsia (16).
This week's pictorial is on how to make the Square Cubed (Stacked Square) unit.
1. Gather the Dark Fabric Square, along with the background Half Square Triangles.
2. Stitch two HST Side Triangles to opposite sides of Square, placing the center square on the top when stitching your best ¼” seam allowance and press seams toward the Side Triangles.
3. I personally like to cut the dog’s ears, then align two additional side triangles to the remaining sides of the Center Squares, stitch again with the center square on top, and press seams toward the Side Triangle.
4. Now, trim the unit before adding the next round of triangles, to do this you will need a newer Square² or Large Square Squared, Part A. Locate the 6” Center Square size lines that you’ll need on the tool. You’ll also want to locate the halfway registration points for that size.
5. Place the tool on the pieced section aligning the halfway registration points and the dashed ¼” line with the sewn seam intersections. See diagram.
6. Trim the up the side and across the top, cleaning up the corner, then lift the tool and rotate pieced section 180°. Reposition tool and trim again. Note you’ll always be aligning the halfway registration points with the seam intersections, but for the second trim you should also align the solid lines with the previously trimmed fabric edges.
7. Gather the 2nd Round Side Triangles, from the Medium Half Square Triangles.
8. Position and Stitch the second round of oversized triangles to the center section. Use an accurate ¼” seam and always stitch with the square on top for best visibility. Press all seams away from the center.
9. Now, trim pieced block to precision size, using the new Square² or Large Square Squared, Part B. Locate the 6 size X’s and cleanup lines you’ll be using to make your next trim.
10. Position the tool over fabric aligning X’s with latest seam intersections to trim first corner.
11. Then lift tool, rotate fabric block 180°, reposition tool and trim the final two sides.
12. Tada! You are finished with the center. Make sure to see the download for the measurements, by April 5th.

I think that is it! Given this is our 12th block. I would love all of you to share with me your 12 blocks on the Facebook group page! Here are mine!
Make sure to download this week's block and to use the Coupon code if you want to purchase the Stack Square Technique Sheet, a new Square2, or the Large Square Squared, Also, remember to prepare for next week's block and purchase the needed tools. The V Block will be required for the next couple of blocks and the Four Patch Square Up is the latest Studio 180 Design Tool and is optional (but a great deal). Now, the only other construction tip I have, is to make sure you place those Quarter Square Triangle together properly.
You will want to make sure you are putting the Dark squares with the Medium-Dark squares, and the Light with the Background for the first pairing. Then, you will want to place the Dark half square triangle on top of the Background for the second pairing. If you do this, and double check, these should come together perfectly. Note; you are going to have (4) pair of mirror image Quarter Square Triangles.
