In 1999, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Bruce Springsteen.  Their introduction stated, “Bruce Springsteen became a voice of underdogs and the working-class, thanks to his unsparing observations about what life was really like for those with no access to a silver spoon.  As a songwriter, however, he was also deeply romantic and sentimental. In long-time collaborators the E Street Band, he found kindred spirits who shared his commitment to barnstorming optimism.”

Bruce Springsteen was born in Long Branch, NJ.  He is considered the originator of heartland rock, a genre combining mainstream rock music with poetic and socially conscious lyrics that tell a narrative about working-class American life.  He has released 21 studio albums, 23 live albums, 77 singles and 66 music videos!  He is widely referred to as “The Boss” and has sold over 150 million records worldwide. Bruce Springsteen might have some of the most recognizable songs in the world, but none of them have earned the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. I was surprised to find out that “Born to Run” never hit No. 1, it only peaked at No. 23.  Bruce’s “Dancing in the Dark” reached No. 2. However, Billboard has ranked him as the 24th greatest artist of all time.

As a teenager in the 80s, growing up in NJ, there was no way I couldn’t be a fan of the Boss.  I don’t think I had a friend who didn’t own a “Born in the U.S.A” album.  There is no way I can even begin to pick only one favorite.  So, amongst my favorites are: “Glory Days”, 1984; “Streets of Fire”, 1978; “Downbound Train”, 1984; “My City of Ruins”, 2002; “Shut Out the Light”, 1984; “Streets of Philadelphia”, 1993; “Dancing in the Dark”, 1984; “Rosalita”, 1973; “Born in the U.S.A.”, 1984; “Thunder Road”, 1975 and “Born to Run”, 1975.

Since I couldn’t pick just one of his songs, I was inspired by Bruce, “The Boss”, himself with his Guitar.  In my mind, the Split Rects #2 represents his Guitar.  I’ve only seen Bruce three times in concert, but he always had a Guitar, and was most often running around the stage with it. I still have hopes that he will return to Broadway and finish his solo show that was cancelled when the pandemic hit.
