Wow! Clue #10 of Holiday Solstice!

Can you believe we are on week 10???  Oh my goodness, we are 8 weeks away from the reveal.

If you read my newsletter this week, you know I've been a bit absence on social media this last week or so, I've just needed to recharge.  I have a lot of deadlines that needed attention, plus a ton of coordination/paperwork to be performed with the cancelling of two of our largest retreats.

It is so sad, but times are still leaving people here in the northeast afraid to have large events in person.  We are hoping that some people will join us virtually.  In fact, if there are a few spots left we might open those up next week to other quilters.  So stay tuned.

Also this coming week, I will be opening up my Online/On Demand Color class to Early Birds.  So make sure you have subscribe to get my Online Class Launch emails.  You can do that at:Online Class Alerts

Now on to Holiday Solstice.  Block 10 is Grandmother's House.  - I just love it.

Really cool Block make with V Block™ , Corner Pop  and Square Squared™.

You are repeating a few techniques here, but they are on a smaller scale. You made Popped V Block units (well they were blocks) in Clue #2.... these are smaller, but same technique.  Then, you made Square Squared units in Clue #4.  So the new unit, is the Flip Corner units.  So, below I've walked you through some tips on this unit and then a few basic reminders for putting your block together.

Remember details are in the Download

Let's talk fabric selection and color

For my Fig Christmas version, I selected the Darkest Red Solid to be the star, so that it could be seen.  Also, used one of those fabulous light prints in the center since it doesn't touch any background

For my Sun Print 2000 version, I used several fabric I haven't used yet; the Light Grey, Medium Green, and the pretty Blue-Red.  I brought back the Blue and lighter Yellow-Green that I've used in prior Blocks

I went with a Triadic Color Plan on this Block for the Sun Print 2020 and I just love it.

Tips on the Flipped Corner Unit

The base square, which is a Background Square, is cut to the exact size we need it to be in the end. So take time cutting these Background Squares. They are not over-sized.

Right Handed

Make sure to line up with the proper size, take time to line this up as you do not want to cut it wrong.  Keep your rotary straight up and down when cutting.  Do not turn it.
And cut

Left Handed

Trim

Next, you are going to be splitting the Background Squares between your Dark and your Medium 1.  Make sure to split the difference.

Stitch with the Background on top and sew your best 1/4" seam.

Set your seam.

Finger press.  It is very easy to distort these units. Take your time.

Then press.

Now it is time to trim.

Right Handed
You should be lining up with the same size that you popped, while ensuring that you are leaving the original unit the same size.  You are only cutting the replacement triangle.

Tada!

Tada

Complete your other units, and lay out your blocks

Take the time to double check your oritentation.  You want the star in the middle and you want the darks in 2 opposite corners and the medium 1 in the other 2 opposite corners.

If you following the pressing instructions, your seams should nest.

Be sure to use a the Seam Stick to get these seams pressed open and flat.

Tada!

I love this block and therefore I named it Grandmother's House!

I hope you are enjoying this as much as I am.  I know we are really building skills here, but I hope you are translating these skill into all your other quilt making.

Take care and keep stitching,

Michelle
